Aimed at providing training, technical and coordination support for food safety activities under the DGHS, as well as to liaison with other agencies, the Govt. has established the Food Safety Unit in 2012. A Food Safety Programme, technically supported by the FAO of UN and financially supported by Dutch Govt. and earlier by the European Commission; is housed and within the administrative set-up of the Food Safety Unit of the IPH. The Programme is implementing its activities under the Operational Plan of National Nutrition Services of the Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Programme. The Unit is manned by a group of experts in food safety and allied field. The IPH is taking necessary steps to make it a full fledged Unit to accomplish its objectives. The Unit is also supported by a number of technical experts of the FAO of UN. The Unit has also been contributing in development of manuals, guidelines, strategies, policies and plans in the areas of food safety and quality control in the country.
